Playing and Realtiy by Donald W. Winnicott
Shin Suk-Ho

Abstract
According to Winnicott, "playing is an experience, always a creative experience, and it is an experience in the space-time continuum, a basic form of living." The capacity for playing lies within the ability to operate within the limitless intermediate area where external and internal realities are compounded into the experience of living. Winnicott developed his ideas on playing and symbolism by linking a child¡¯s play back to the use of transitional phenomena and forward towards the mature individual¡¯s capacity to discover the self in all aspects of the environment, and in so doing to make a contribution to the world. Winnicott elaborated on his theory of playing and believed that play is universal and crucial to health for the following reasons£º(1) playing facilitates growth and therefore health£»(2) playing leads in the formation of group relationships£»(3) playing can be a form of communication in psychotherapy£»and (4) finally, psychoanalysis has been developed as a highly specialized form of playing in the service of communication with oneself and with others.
